Kevin Fought was nearly unstoppable at the plate on Wednesday night as the Redbirds torched the Brewers 12-1 at The Parks at Texas Star. Fought went a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs while scoring another, leading a relentless offensive assault that saw the Redbirds pile up 17 hits and explode for eight runs in a back-breaking fourth inning.
After falling behind briefly on a sac fly by the Brewers in the top of the second, the Redbirds answered with authority. Chris Cec sparked a rally with a double, followed by another two-bagger from Lester Bedford. Fought drove in a run with a single, and by the time the inning was over, the Redbirds had stormed ahead 3-1.
They weren’t done. The floodgates burst open in the fourth. With one out, the Redbirds strung together a flurry of base hits and aggressive baserunning. A Brewers error opened the door, then Cec added to his stellar night by tagging up and scoring. Joe Lowry ripped a two-run single, Marc Boggio followed with an RBI single of his own, and Gamez added to the tally with another base knock. Fought stepped in and continued his perfect day at the plate, singling home a run, and Mark Tierney capped the outburst with another RBI hit. When the dust settled, eight runs had crossed the plate, and the Redbirds held a commanding 12-1 lead.
Troy Key was sharp on the mound, earning the win by holding the Brewers to just one hit and one run over three innings. He struck out one and walked one before turning things over to Boggio and Brent Smerczynski, who each tossed a clean frame to secure the run-rule win.
Along with Fought’s perfect night, Boggio was also 3-for-3 and drove in a run. Lowry, Bedford, and Cec each collected two RBIs. The Redbirds also flashed their speed, swiping three bases and playing flawless defense behind their pitchers.
The victory keeps the Redbirds rolling as they continue their strong summer stretch. With contributions from top to bottom and Fought leading the way, this club looks locked in as they eye their next matchup.
