Clawson Cruises as Redbirds Silence Metroflex

The Redbirds (50+) brought their full arsenal to McInnish Sports Complex on Saturday, using stellar pitching and opportunistic offense to shut down Metroflex 7-1 in a commanding win.

Scott Clawson was the story on the mound, twirling four shutout innings and striking out six to earn the win. The right-hander gave up just three hits and a single walk, keeping the Metroflex bats quiet through the heart of their lineup. Clawson’s efficiency set the tone for the Redbirds, who followed his lead with airtight defense and timely hitting.

The offense broke through in the fourth inning, sparked by a fielder’s choice from Jerry Gamez that pushed across the game’s first run. Moments later, Aaron Nowels delivered the big blow — a line-drive single that plated two more. Nowels added a sac fly later in the game to finish with three RBIs, earning him Player of the Game honors.

Though the Redbirds managed only four hits, they made every one count, capitalizing on Metroflex miscues and adding runs with aggressive base running. Mikio Ichiba contributed a double and later stole two bases, part of a five-steal team effort. The Redbirds took full advantage of six walks and two hit batters, executing a patient game plan that wore down Metroflex pitching.

Mark Tierney and Troy Key kept things steady out of the bullpen, with Ichiba slamming the door in the seventh — striking out two and sealing a no-hit frame.

The win keeps the Redbirds’ momentum rolling as they prepare to host their next opponent. If Saturday’s performance is any indication, this club is clicking in every phase — and looks poised for a strong stretch run.
